If we look at Spike VGA 2010 Heavy Rain were nominated for two categories: Best PS3 game and best graphics, of which it didn't win anything (Both went to God of War III). I know people tend to hate Spike VGA, but this is merely an example But the games were very different received in the gaming community. In TWD you play Lee, a guy on his way to prison get into a car accident, flees and then meets a little girl named Clementine, whom he promises to protect.īoth sounds awfully familiar? Other than the graphic styles are very different - The Walking Dead with it's comicbook style and Heavy Rain wants to look real. Who kidnapped Shaun and why is what the story evolves around. Simply put the story in HR is about Ethan and is mission to rescue his kidnapped kid, Shaun. HR has 4 playable characters, all who are tied into the main plot some way or another, and you play all of them - but the main character is Ethan. The games offers limited movement and free roam, often somewhat narrow but with multiple choices.
Both feature quick-time events (QTE), often in intense situations where you can't sit back and consider your choice. They both emphasize on the player making decisions in moral dilemmas and thus influence the development of the story and characters' relationship. 2012 were a year with other critically acclaimed games like Journey (PS3 exclusive), Borderlands 2, Far Cry 3, Dishonored, Guild Wars 2, Sleeping Dogs and FTL - Faster Than Light.īoth Heavy Rain (HR) and The Walking Dead (TWD) are very familiar in terms of mechanics and gameplay.

The Walking Dead was released as a series over 2012 - The first in April and the last in December - with a total of 5 episodes, released on iOS, OS X, PS3, XBOX360 and PC. Heavy Rain was released exclusively on PS3 back in 2010, a year where other critically acclaimed games like Mass Effect 2, Super Meat Boy, Red Dead Redemption, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Starcraft 2 were released. But amongst gamers (and thus non-critics) the game seems more hated than loved due to it's nature and limitness of exploration and interaction. I'm not saying, that Heavy Rain isn't critically acclaimed amongs reviewers, because in general the game has good reputation amongst them.
